Union Cabinet approves ₹4,797 crore for PRITHVI scheme

The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the untried light to the “Prithvi Vigyan” initiative, a comprehensive program encompassing five ongoing sub-schemes related to earth sciences. This monumental project comes at a forfeit of ₹4,797 crore, allocated for implementation over a five-year span from 2021 to 2026.

The tried sub-schemes under the initiative are as follows:

“Atmosphere and Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems and Services” (ACROSS)
“Ocean Services, Modelling Application, Resources and Technology” (O-SMART)
“Polar Science and Cryosphere Research” (PACER)
“Seismology and Geosciences” (SAGE)
“Research, Education, Training, and Outreach” (REACHOUT)
The official statement on the overarching scheme, named “Prithvi Vigyan” or “PRITHVI,” outlines its role in fostering integrated multi-disciplinary earth science research and innovative programs wideness various institutes falling under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). The integrated research and minutiae efforts aim to tackle significant challenges in weather and climate, oceanography, cryosphere research, seismological science and services, and the exploration of living and non-living resources for sustainable harnessing.

Key objectives of the “PRITHVI” scheme include:

Augmentation and sustenance of long-term observations of the atmosphere, ocean, geosphere, cryosphere, and solid earth to record vital signs and changes in the Earth system.
Development of modeling systems for understanding and predicting weather, ocean, and climate hazards, as well as comprehending the science of climate change.
Exploration of polar and upper seas regions for the discovery of new phenomena and resources.
Development of technology for the exploration and sustainable harnessing of oceanic resources for societal applications.
Translation of knowledge and insights from earth systems science into services for societal, environmental, and economic benefit.
The initiative recognizes the interdependence of various components and emphasizes an integrated approach, involving combined efforts from the concerned institutes under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences, with a mandate to translate scientific knowledge into services for society, covers a range of services, including weather forecasts, climate monitoring, hydrology, seismology, and natural hazard warnings. These services play a crucial role in saving human lives and minimizing property forfeiture during natural disasters, and they are powerfully utilized by variegated agencies and state governments.

Earth System Sciences, as addressed by the “PRITHVI” scheme, deal with the ramified interactions among the five components of the earth system: atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere. The initiative reflects India’s transferral to up-and-coming earth sciences for sustainable minutiae and harnessing resources in a manner that benefits society and the environment.

This comprehensive and would-be initiative demonstrates the government’s dedication to up-and-coming scientific research and leveraging technology to write pressing challenges related to Earth’s various systems. As “PRITHVI” unfolds over the next five years, it is poised to make significant contributions to earth sciences, fostering innovation, and creating a foundation for sustainable development.
