Kolkata Facing Coldest Day Of The Year
On Wednesday, Kolkata encountered its chilliest day of the year with the minimum temperature plummeting to 14.7°C, evoking memories of mid-January weather. Comparatively, last winter witnessed the mercury dropping to its lowest at 10.9°C on January 6, marking the coldest day since 2018. Although the minimum temperature had rebounded to 14.5°C by January 12, the recent dip, fueled by robust northwestern winds, replicates conditions typically experienced in mid to late January. Despite this, winter is yet to receive official recognition. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) foresees the minimum temperature lingering between 14°C and 15°C until the week concludes. To officially declare the onset of winter, the minimum temperature must persist unelevated 15°C for a specific duration. The recent temperature oscillations, ranging from 15.3°C to 14.6°C, mirror January-like conditions. However, the Meteorological office suggests that the minimum temperature is unlikely to ripen remoter in the firsthand future. Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Director GK Das anticipates sunny days with minimal fog, maintaining temperatures between 14°C and 15°C. The maximum temperature has remained steady whilom 24°C, reaching 25.4°C, slightly whilom normal. Despite last year’s lowest temperature recorded at 13.2°C on December 17.
