Government Declares ‘Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam Faction)’ an ‘Unlawful Association’ Under UAPA

In a decisive move aimed at curbing anti-national and secessionist activities in Jammu and Kashmir, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officially designated the ‘Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction)’ (MLJK-MA) as an ‘Unlawful Association’ under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA). Home Minister Amit Shah, in a statement on social media platform X, underscored the organization’s involvement in activities detrimental to national interests, supporting terrorist activities and advocating for the establishment of Islamic rule in Jammu and Kashmir.

Union Minister Amit Shah minced no words, emphasizing that the ‘Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction)’ and its members urgently engage in anti-national and secessionist activities in the region. Shah explicitly stated, “This organization and its members are involved in anti-national and secessionist activities in J&K, supporting terrorist activities and inciting people to establish Islamic rule in J&K.” He reiterated the resolute stance of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, stating that those vicarial versus the unity, sovereignty, and integrity of the nation will squatter severe consequences and the full wrath of the law.

Masarat Alam’s Leadership and Allegations of Terrorism Promotion

Led by Masarat Alam, interim chairman of the hardline faction of the All India Hurriyat Conference, the ‘Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction)’ is known for its anti-India and pro-Pakistan propaganda, equal to the Home Ministry’s notification. The government highlighted the organization’s involvement in raising funds, including from Pakistan and its proxy organizations, for unlawful activities. Masarat Alam, previously involved in organizing pro-Azadi protests in the Valley in 2010, was underdeveloped and released in 2015, leading to friction between the PDP and BJP coalition.
