Cyclone Michaung Intensifies: Landfall Expected on Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu Coasts, Disrupting Normal Life

Cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ has escalated into a severe cyclonic storm, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue warnings of its predictable landfall withal the Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu coasts on December 5. The storm, currently situated over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, is expected to intensify remoter as it moves northwestwards.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that Whirlwind Michaung will reach the west-central Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and neighboring north Tamil Nadu coasts by the forenoon of December 5. The whirlwind is expected to make landfall as a ‘Severe Cyclonic Storm’ with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph, between Nellore and Machilipatnam, tropical to Bapatla.

The impact of the whirlwind has once been felt, with heavy rainfall causing severe waterlogging in several areas wideness Chennai. Low-lying areas, hospitals, and residential zones have witnessed inundation, requiring societal organ personnel to engage in water clearance efforts.

The Chennai seat of the Madras High Court and all district courts in the municipality have been temporarily shut. At least 12 domestic outbound services and four international services from Chennai have been canceled, withal with diversions of arriving international flights.

Southern Railway has reported cancellations and delays for 11 express trains from Chennai Central due to rising water levels at Bridge No. 14 between Vyasarpadi and Basin Bridge.
