China Sets Conditions for Taliban Recognition: Political Reforms and Improved Security Key
In a significant development, China has outlined conditions that Afghanistan’s Taliban must fulfill before it receives full diplomatic recognition from Beijing. The requirements include the introduction of political reforms, enhanced security measures, and improved relations with neighboring countries.
China, which has not officially recognized the Taliban government, emphasized the need for Afghanistan to build an open and inclusive political structure, implement stable domestic and foreign policies, and combat terrorist forces resolutely. The foreign ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, stated, “As the concerns of all parties receive stronger responses, diplomatic recognition of the Afghan government will naturally follow.”
While maintaining diplomatic engagement, neither China nor any other country has officially recognized the Taliban since it seized power in August 2021 following the withdrawal of US troops. The Taliban has been urged to live in harmony with all countries, especially neighboring nations, and integrate with the international community.
Despite not granting full diplomatic recognition, China has offered economic support and investment for the reconstruction of Afghanistan. A position paper released by the Chinese foreign ministry this year emphasized respect for the independent choices made by the Afghan people and their religious beliefs and national customs. The situation unfolds against the backdrop of evolving geopolitical dynamics in the region.
