President of India Approves 277 Gallantry Awards on the Eve of 75th Republic Day
A Day before the 75th Republic Day celebrations, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced the gallantry awards and service medals for security personnel on Thursday. According to the official statement released by the home ministry, 1,132 security personnel will be conferred with the honours for their exceptional services.
Key Highlights:
- Diversity in Recognition: Among the 277 gallantry awards, a diverse group of individuals is being honored for their courageous actions. This includes 119 personnel from Left Wing Extremism affected areas, 133 from the Jammu & Kashmir region, and 25 from other regions.
- Regional Breakdown: Out of the total gallantry medals, 275 awards have been presented to 72 individuals from J&K Police, 18 from Maharashtra, 26 from Chhattisgarh, 23 from Jharkhand, 15 from Odisha, 8 from Delhi, 65 from CRPF, 21 from SSB, and the remainder from other States/UTs and Central Armed Police Forces.
- Recognition for UN Peacekeeping: Two Police Medals for Gallantry (PMG) have been awarded to BSF personnel for their outstanding contribution to the peacekeeping mission as part of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO).
- Historical Context: The gallantry awards, a tradition since independence, play a crucial role in recognizing and honoring security personnel for their acts of bravery. Three gallantry awards – Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, and Vir Chakra – were instituted by the Government of India on January 26, 1950.
- Service Medals: Apart from gallantry awards, service medals have been announced for 1,132 security personnel from Fire Service, Police, Civil Defence, Home Guard, and Correctional Service for their exceptional services.
- President’s Medal: President’s Medal for Gallantry has been conferred upon two security personnel, and Medal for Gallantry has been awarded to 275 personnel.
